Scene Styles was made by me due to the fact that I have had 'scene hair' since 2003-2004 before the scene really got going here in South Africa. I have always been a huge fan of the style, and in the beginning had to put up with a lot of shit from people who had just heard of emo online, and thought every person with a scene haircut, cuts themselves.
As time went by it became more popular and essentially less people started asking "zOMFG, your hair!! HOW DID YOU DO IT". So after turning down an invitation to work as a hair dresser I started in the online industry,Scene Styles though was purely a hobby for me. I've been working on the site since earlier in the year and it took me some time to get it up, and even though scene hair style seem to not be as popular as a year ago as far as people looking for them goes. I felt it was important to have a decent site with information, not just 1 or 2 images like other sites have.
Now I'm trying to build a community around the site, which is a bit harder. I would love to have active, positive forums and people actively involved in the site. I've seen some other scene and emo sites and while their forums are active they don't really offer any content.

Male Scene Hair - How To Get Scene Hair
Introduction
Hair! This part of scene fashion receives the most attention, scene hair is a vital part of the scene kid look and should definitely be paid attention to. Popular Male Scene Hair
The most common scene hair style among males, this hair is created by using the following steps :
Step 1 : The hair will need to be grown to the desired length, in this case you will not need to cut the back too short but rather keep it just below collar length. While still growing the front and sides of the hair to full length.
Step 2 : Brush the hair with any comb or brush until the hair is neat.
Step 3 : Straighten the hair with a hair straightener in all places until the hair is the desired shape.
Step 4 : Proceed to apply a small amount of hair spray or wax to the desired areas for a sturdier appearance, for this style hair wax would probably work better, and be sure to only use a small amount.
Spiked Male Scene Hair
This male hair style is achieved by following the following steps :
Step 1 : To cut this hairstyle one will need rather long hair, or you can take your time to grow the hair out while styling it. If you already have a long enough fringe you can cut the hair by leaving the front-sides of the fringe long but in the front of the hair you must cut the hair near eyebrow length, while letting the hair be longer as you move to the sides. Cut the back relatively short as well as the top, as can be seen in the image above.
Step 2 : Brush or comb the hair
Step 3 : Straighten the hair with a hair straightener
Step 4 : Use a blow dryer on the back of the hair while spraying the area with hair spray. Another alternative is to use wax on the area, blow drying first tends to make the hair mold to the upward position easier.

Step 6 : Use wax on the fringe/bangs to provide shape in the hair so it holds.

This very interesting hair style is actually for both males and females. It is less common than many of the other scene hairstyles, though has become somewhat more popular of late, here is how to achieve it :
Step 1 : Make sure your hair is long enough to style.
Step 2 : Perform a straight cut across your fringe, but no further than the end of your eyebrows.
Step 3 : Cut in a curved but straight manner down the sides of your face, as can be seen in the picture above.
Step 4 : Perform a straight cut on the hair all around the back on either sides, so that the style blends in from the front to the back.
Step 5 : Layer the top-back of the hair as to create the effect of two layers. Once you have performed this technique, you can dye the two layered sections different colours as seen above to create more of a contrast between the sections.
Short Male Scene Hair
How to Get Short Male Scene Hair :
Another male scene hairstyle is the short scene hair look. This is most commonly sought after by those who need to look professional while at work or school, but then want to be able to change it's style when they get home or go out, or just for those who aren't into the longer hair. The difficulty with this style is that it often doesn't look quite scene enough, but there are ways to change this. I would recommend an extreme dye job to really make it stand out. Perhaps jet black with a coloured fringe/bangs. For the short male scene hair look you will definitely need to straighten your hair as much as possible, I would suggest having the hair cut somewhat in a ragged way in the front.. the shortest part around your eyebrow and then differing in length to any length you want, as long as it's longer.
Another recommended thing to do with short scene hair with guys is to get some gel or hair spray and 'spike' the back of your hair up while keeping the front straightened. This can create a more 'scene' look than if you were to have all of the hair down. It is also a good option to perhaps leave the sides infront of your ears longer than a usual hairstyle. Which creates almost an 'anime' look. Another option is also to 'rough up' the hair which creates a messy look that works well when hair is dyed in contrasting colours.
Mohawk

So you want to get to know how to get a mohawk? While this hairstyle is not scene or emo really, it is huge in the punk scene. And remember that both scene and emo have their roots deep in the punk culture. The mohawk was traditionally a Native American hairstyle but became famous in the 70s and 80s when the punk movement was in full swing. There are various celebrities with mohawks, though the mohawk has been thrown in the trash of late. With the popularity of the 'fauxhawk', ( A fake mohawk that is easy to sport and really doesn't make one stand out at all. ) really skyrocketing within the jock culture.

If you want to get a mohawk you better be ready to spend quite a bit on hair products. For thinner and shorter mohawks it is possible to put it up with hair spray, for the slightly longer and thicker mohawks you will be able to get by using good gel in lots of cases, for the long mohawks you may need to resort to other methods such as special gels, wood glue or gelatine. All of these are commonly used on the mohawk.
Step 4. After apply the product to the hair, in most cases you should use a blow dryer on a low setting to make the product that you used really hold the hair up right. Putting up a mohawk will often take you weeks or months to master, but once you learn how to put up a mohawk you will gather momentum and be able to do it in minutes.

Straightening ones hair is a rather straight forward activity.There are various kinds of straighteners on the market, mainly consisting of 2 types namely dry straighteners and wet and dry straighteners. While it is possible to use a dry straightener on damp hair it's not recommended.
Step 1 : Make sure your hair is preferably clean and free of any oils, grease or gels. Also make sure that your hair is dry whether it be from blow drying or towel drying.
Step 2 : Select your hair straighteners temperature settings which one can change and each settings has a different effectiveness for each persons hair so maybe take some time to find the best settings for your hair, it's recommended that you try a medium temperature and do not use the straightener on it's maximum temperature.The curlier the hair does not mean the hotter the straightener must be.
Step 3 : Check if your straightener has warmed up to the appropriate temperature.Most hair straighteners have a light which tells you when it has reached the desired temperature.
Step 4 : Begin straightening the hair from the root, pulling down hard right to the tip of the hair.When straightening, clamp individual areas of hair and continue until you are happy with the result, then repeat this through all the hair you want straightened.
Step 5 : If needed or desired, apply appropriate hair product such as wax or gel.

Dying the hair is a common activity for both scene girls and scene guys.The most common colour in the scene and emo fashion is jet black, while it remains more common for the emo style rather than the scene style where you would typically find brighter colours such as red, blue and purple dyes.
While some scenesters decide to do their entire hair in colour the more common practice is to dye majority of the hair black and then to bleach certain selected areas, most commonly the fringe(Bangs) and possibly then apply a colour to the bleached area.
When bleaching the hair the directions differ from brand to brand and one should read the instructions that come with for the best results.As for colouring, it is acceptable to leave the colour on for 20-30% longer than instructed.For your colour to last longer there are various products which result in a longer lasting, more vibrant shine.

Step 1 : Bleach the areas you want the raccoon tail look.Follow the instructions of the bleach carefully.When completed wash and dry the hair.Note that if you plan on dying the remainder of your hair as well, bleach the entire head and then apply the desired colour dye to the remainder of the hair after completing the raccoon tail.
Step 2 : Take a small area of bleached hair and put a band around the roots of this area to hold it in place.
Step 3 : Place tape around the areas of your hair where you want the bleached areas to remains, generally this is around 2 inches apart.The thickness of your stripes are up to you.
Step 4 : Take some of the coloured dye and apply it to the areas between the pieces of tape.Rub this dye in carefully without getting it under the tape.Leave this dye on for the amount instructed per the dye's instructions.
Step 5 : Rinse out the dye and while doing so the tape will automatically come off due to the water.
Step 6 : Repeat step 2 and 3 and 4 until you have completed your desired look.

5 Celebrity Scene Hair Styles
Davey Havok is the singer from the punk band AFI, he has had what many would call 'scene' hair for a number of years now. Though over the past few years his hair became even more 'scene'-like. This image is from a few years ago when his hair was at it's peak of 'sceneness'.
Conor Oberst from the band Bright Eyes has had what many call emo hair for a long time, probably into the 1990s and was one of the band members who had a lot to do with the growth of the emo and scene hairstyle within the past decade. He grew his hair out around the period of Bright Eyes' last album release, though he has apparently cut it since then.

5 Bands That Killed Emo By Making It Big
Even though at this time many forums, social networking sites and imageboards were talking about 'emo', it hadn't made it's appearance onto the mainstream circuit. It remained a relatively underground movement for over 20 years before finally breaking through into the mainstream in the mid 2000s. And as can be expected with a genre which already had enough negative misconceptions online by 2005, once it became more popular those internet rumors as to what emo consisted of and the general hate it has recieved by other genres began to spready in the real world. We will be going over which bands broke through the underground scene and into the mainstream, creating emo into one large hate magnet.

My Chemical Romance
This band is loved by plenty of scene and emo kids around the world. But before they became what they are today (An MTV overplayed Pop-punk/Alternative band), they used to be emo. Let's look back to 2002 when they released the album 'I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love', this album was heavily influenced by the alternative rock and emo genres. I doubt you will find many people who disagree that this album was infact 'emo'. This album recieved very little media attention as MCR was still signed to a smaller record label at the time.
In 2004 they released the album 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge', which had a rather post-hardcore/emo feel to it and one could probably go as far as to say that album also fell within the third wave emo genre. At this time (Between 2004-2006) emo was already slowly creeping beyond the door of the underground and up onto the mainstream, and with this MTV snapped up the video for 'Helana' as well as 'I'm Not Okay (I Promise)' which ended up being played on the hour. At this time large radio stations were doing the same, playing the bands singles.
In late 2006 - early 2007 the band released their album 'The Black Parade', and while their style had actually taken a slight turn from the actual emo genre people were stuck with the idea that the band was an emo band and they remained known as one through out 2007 and 2008 by the majority of people. And through all the negative publicity emo had been getting since 2004 the band publicly stated that emo was 'shit', a statement I'm sure a lot of emo kids don't know was said. They denounced the genre and tried to seperate themselves from the now already mainstream genre.

Fall Out Boy
This Emo/Pop-Punk band made it's breakthrough onto the mainstream fairly late, in the latter months of 2006 with the music video for the song 'This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race' taken off their album 'Infinity on High' being debuted on MTV with regular airing.
Where My Chemical Romance had brought more of an alternative sound, reeling in those interested in the rock side of things into emo, Fall Out Boy on the other hand reached into Pop-Punk for it's sounds, and thus had tapped into another market with it's sounds. Which made the emo genre even larger with more exposure.
As if it wasn't bad enough the band had broken through onto the mainstream circut and created more trendy high school kids into 'emo kids' for the popularity they then went and collaborated with some huge hip-hop stars such as Timberland and Kanye West.

Panic! At The Disco
Now before you get ready to correct me. This band isn't really an emo band as such and rather a Rock/Pop-Punk band. But with all the confusion and huge buzz with 'emo' breaking through onto the mainstream people seemed to pile P!ATD right up there with Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance and was ultimately labeled emo by numerous fans of the band. Not to mention they were marketted as an emo band.
Their breakthrough came around the same time as Fall Out Boy, perhaps a bit earlier. With the release of their album 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out', this album was fairly underground when it was released with majority of fans remaining those on myspace. But a good few months after the bands album release and after the media found that their music was so very popular online they decided to promote them up onto that dreaded mainstream arena. The music video for their song 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies' became a huge hit on mtv and radio stations alike, and they too were adding fuel to the fire which was emo, and more importantly mainstream emo.

Green Day
That's right, the punk band which released such classic albums as 'Dookie' and 'Insomniac'. The band has played a large role in Punk within the mainstream, since the bands formation in the mid 1980s. They generally held a typical punk sound developing a slight pop-punk feel in the 90s.
In 2004 the band released the album 'American Idiot', and while Green Day was in no way new to the mainstream media and being played on MTV this time it was different. The band downed their very laid back look and went for a very 'emo' look, with constrasting red and black suits (Popular among third wave emo culture), and eye liner which had also become common practice within the emo genre.
Once again as with P!ATD, Green Day released their album in a time where there was plenty of confusion among fans and critics alike as to exactly what was emo and what wasn't. And since Green Day now carried the emo look, plenty of the critics were convinced Green Day had turned into an emo band. And thus young Green Day fans spread further into the emo culture and they had done their part to spread misconception.

Hawthorne Heights
This Post-Hardcore/Screamo band released their album 'The Silence In Black and White' in mid-2004 and while it was recieved well online it, it had minimal mainstream media play-time. Though the song 'Ohio Is For Lovers' was quite popular and the media did on occasions play the video for the song.
Their bigger break came in 2006 with the media popularity of the song 'Pens and Needles' from their album 'If Only You Were Lonely', the media seemed to play this song more often than 'Ohio Is For Lovers' and since emo was peaking around the time of the release of 'Pens and Needles' it is also just what the media wanted
As a sad side note : Hawthorne Heights guitarist, Casey Calvert died of a prescription drug overdose while on tour in 2007.
